Ingredients
Scale
- 3 large sweet potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced (about 1/8-inch thick)
- 2 cups heavy cream
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 1/2 cups grated Gruyere cheese, divided
- 1 tablespoon fresh sage, chopped
- 1 fresh sage sprig
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F. Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with 1 tablespoon of unsalted butter.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the heavy cream, minced garlic, ground nutmeg, salt, and black pepper.
- Arrange one-third of the thinly sliced sweet potatoes in an even layer in the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
- Sprinkle 1/2 cup of grated Gruyere cheese and half of the chopped fresh sage over the sweet potato layer.
- Pour one-third of the cream mixture evenly over the sweet potato layer.
- Repeat steps 3-5 twice more, creating two additional layers of sweet potatoes, cheese, chopped sage, and cream mixture. Ensure the final layer of sweet potatoes is covered with cream.
- Cover the baking dish tightly with aluminum foil. Bake for 40 minutes.
- Remove the foil, sprinkle the remaining 1/2 cup of grated Gruyere cheese over the top, and continue baking for an additional 20-25 minutes, or until the sweet potatoes are tender, and the top is golden brown and bubbly.
- Let the gratin rest for 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with the fresh sage sprig.
