  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar, sifted
  • ½ cup black cocoa powder, sifted
  • 46 tablespoons heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 cup fresh blackberries
  • 34 dark chocolate skulls (store-bought or molded)
  • 1 teaspoon edible dried rose petals

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F and prepare two 8-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, mix flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. In another bowl, whisk eggs, buttermilk, oil, and vanilla; combine with dry ingredients and add hot water until smooth.
  3. Bake for 30-35 minutes; cool completely.
  4. Prepare blackberry compote by simmering blackberries, sugar, and lemon juice until thickened.
  5. For the buttercream, beat butter until creamy; gradually add powdered sugar and cocoa powder followed by heavy cream to desired consistency.
  6. Assemble layers with compote between them; frost with buttercream and decorate with blackberries and skulls.
